Senate Judiciary Committee

Lee Constantine, R-Altamonte Springs, chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, one of three key committees with interest in Florida’s precedent-setting deal with CSX Railroad.

Constantine is a policy wonk who usually brings parties together to form consensus. He’s worked controversial issues in the past, including the Wekiva Parkway, and has helped create compromise. But on this deal, he’s ignoring the facts and like everyone else from Orlando, pushing, pushing, pushing.

Constantine is said to want his train above all else. His chairmanship gives him leverage over non-railroad-related legislation backed by the Florida Justice Association, an association of trial lawyers that last year helped influence the defeat of the CSX deal. Some say Constantine forced the association’s change of heart this year. Because the trial lawyers have bigger issues with legislation on nursing homes and auto insurance, they are now “neutral” on the CSX deal.
